Tofu you, tofu me

Today is one of those days that I would usually say "eh, I'll just post something some other day when I feel interesting." But, today is still part of VeganMoFo, and I made a commitment to post something food related every day, whether I really feel like it or not. I don't have any pictures, because I haven't had anything but leftovers recently. I think this is a good time to eeny-meeny-mynee-mo the lists of ideas floating around. Hmm..let's see..aha. My first tofu experience.

Well, it wasn't really my first, but I seriously cannot remember the first time I tried tofu. This memory comes from a time when I was just becoming familiar with tofu. I was in the "natural market" section of the grocery store, browsing the aisles for something to strike my fancy. I came across a package of the flavored silken tofu. I think it was 5 spice or something. I inspected it, and read that it could be stir fried, and the pretty picture on the front seemed promising. So, in my basket it went, along with very much anticipation for a quick dinner one night after a long day. In my pantry it sat, until finally the day came that I decided to give it a try. I opened up the package, and took a huge whiff...eh, not so appetizing. But, I figured with a touch of ginger, and some nice crisp veggies it would turn out lovely. I drained it, patted it dry, cubed it up, and put it in the pan. Immediately things went wrong. It stuck, and wasn't quite firm enough to hold up to stir fry standards. After much aggrivation, I finally decided to break down and whip it into a "scramble". Bad idea. I ended up with a bunch of nice veggies stuck in a puddle of disgusting mashed up tofu gunk. Needless to say, I learned my lesson that day: do not try to stir fry silken tofu. Stick to puddings, ricotta, mayo, sour cream, and all of the other various things it can be used for.

Phew, now that I have finally admitted to such an embarassing faux pas, we can all move along and remember the better days for tofu.

Haha! I remember being very confused about the whole draining the tofu thing. I looked at so many websites before I finally believed it.
Funny story, made me smile :-) (but that kind of thing happens to everyone....)

I wish I could remember my first experience with tofu. I'm sure it was even more amusing. I remember a story I heard about someone putting it raw on crackers. That sounds disgusting.
